A field note · Being and Time §35 · morning review

Idle talk is not a vice

It is the average intelligibility in which one passes along what “one says” without appropriating it. A language model is a machine for producing that talk. Neither is an insult.

Gerede / durchschnittliche Verständlichkeit 25 August 2026

Idle talk (Gerede) is not gossip one could drop, and not a lie. It is how everyday discourse already understands: what is said is passed along (weitergesagt) at the level of average intelligibility, without going back to the thing talked about. Groundlessness (Bodenlosigkeit) is this lack of appropriation, not a lack of words. The whole of a matter can already be understood, as far as talking goes, before anyone has taken it over. Being-with already lives in this publicness; das Man does not first decide to chatter.

Plate I · the specimen

A paragraph that was never taken over

passable

It reads as a competent remark on Being and Time. Click the worn phrases. They are not errors. They are how the matter already circulates.

, Being and Time is Heidegger’s , in which . , authenticity means , while inauthenticity is a kind of falling into the they. idle talk, curiosity, and ambiguity are the everyday modes of disclosedness, and that authentic resoluteness overcomes this fallenness. The book therefore remains, , a foundational text for and for any serious thinking about the meaning of Being.

Fluency alone does not settle accuracy or understanding. Click a dotted phrase. What opens is not a correction but the unearned: the already-understood.

Plate II · two uses

Pass it along, or make it one’s own

the same topic

The specimen can be retold, and it will still be understood. Or the same matter can be said once, stubbornly — the sentence that does not survive as a slogan.

Two uses. One keeps the average intelligibility in circulation. The other asks what it would take to justify the claim.

Plate III · without a who

Fluency alone does not settle accuracy or understanding.

The Padua abstract puts this structure on a machine, and this page does not repeat that abstract. It is the specimen. A model can produce Plate I without having been in the phenomenon. That is not a defect in the model, and not a shame in the reader who recognized the paragraph too quickly. Recognition is what idle talk is for.

§35 already describes a fluency that does not go back to the thing. Mitsein was the ordinary support of that fluency. A language model is another support: passable talk without a speaker who has understood, and without a Dasein whose everydayness is at issue. This application to AI is an interpretive extension of Being and Time §35, not Heidegger’s statement about AI or an established finding about consciousness.

The companion note on the hammer distinguishes practical disturbance and conspicuousness within use from deliberate detached present-at-hand inspection. Here the covering-over is the other way: when the sentence is good, nothing breaks. The they-understanding has no one left who had to have been there. The test is not origin. The stubborn sentence can be generated too, and would then be Gerede about appropriation. The test is whether anyone has had the phenomenon.
